However, they cannot be placed on the teeth right away; your dentist will need to remove a certain amount of enamel first. It’s always best to have a firm idea of what to expect before any dental treatment, so here’s a closer look at just how much enamel will need to be taken off your teeth before you can receive veneers.

How Much Enamel is Normally Removed for Veneers?

Generally, about half a millimeter of enamel will be removed from the tooth or teeth in question. Naturally, this amount can vary from patient to patient; some teeth may need more or less shaving than others. Rest assured that your dentist will make maintaining the overall structure of your tooth a priority; as such, they will strive to only take away a minimal amount of enamel.

Don’t forget that enamel does not grow back regardless of how much (or how little) is removed. Consequently, the process of getting veneers is considered to be irreversible. Any teeth that have had enamel taken off will always need to be covered by veneers (or another type of dental restoration, such as a crown).

Why Is Removing Enamel Part of the Veneers Process?

First of all, removing enamel will help roughen the surface of the tooth. A rough surface makes it easier for the adhesive to form a lasting bond, so the veneer will be less likely to fall off.

Furthermore, placing a veneer right away would result in a tooth that looks too big. Removing enamel creates extra space for the veneer and gives the tooth a much more natural appearance overall.

What Will Happen After Enamel Has Been Removed?

Once your dentist is done with the process of removing enamel, they’ll capture impressions of the tooth or teeth in question. This is to help ensure that the final veneers look as natural as possible. After that, temporary veneers will be placed on your teeth.

The impressions will be sent to a dental laboratory. The technicians there will create a set of veneers that have been carefully personalized for your unique smile. The completed veneers will be sent to your dentist’s office so that they can be attached to your teeth during one final appointment.

Do you have questions about enamel removal or any other aspect of the veneers process? Let your dentist know so that they can help guide you toward a decision that’s truly right for your grin.

About the Author

Dr. James Nelson is a proud graduate of the LSU School of Dentistry in New Orleans, and he has completed the Heartland Aesthetic Continuum.
