This month is National Gum Care Month,\nand to celebrate, your dentist wants to make sure you understand the signs of needing\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nelsondentalcarela.com\/preventive-dentistry.html#gum\">gum\ndisease treatment<\/a> in Metairie \u2013 and what could happen if you don\u2019t have the\nprocedure done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Will You Know if You Have Gum Disease?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The bad news is that in many cases, gum disease is silent.\nThat means you might not see any symptoms until the more advanced stages that\nare harder to treat. That said, there are a few warning signs you can watch\nfor:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Red and\/or swollen gum tissue<\/li><li>Tender gums or other kinds of pain in your mouth<\/li><li>Bleeding often while brushing, flossing or eating\nhard food<\/li><li>Teeth that look longer than they used to (which could\nmean that your gums are receding)<\/li><li>Loose or separating teeth<\/li><li>Sores in the mouth<\/li><li>Persistent bad breath<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Again, you might not experience all or any of these\nsymptoms. That\u2019s why it\u2019s important to have at least two dental checkups a\nyear; your dentist can find issues that you\u2019ve overlooked and can give you the\nbest chance of identifying and treating gum disease quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What If Gum Disease is Left Alone?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s very unfortunate that many people don\u2019t realize they\nhave gum disease until it\u2019s too late. The earliest stage, gingivitis, is\nrelatively mild, but if it advances to periodontitis, the bone in your jaw\ncould be destroyed. Eventually, you could start losing your teeth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the long term, gum disease has been tied with many potentially\nsevere health issues. For example, many studies have found that patients with\ninfected gums are at a higher risk for heart attacks, stroke and other\ncardiovascular problems. While a direct causal relationship hasn\u2019t been fully confirmed\nyet, it\u2019s undeniable that poor oral health tends to be linked to an overall\nunhealthy body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Can Gum Disease Be Prevented?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Fortunately, there are plenty of ways that you can reduce\nyour risk of gum disease, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Brushing for two to three minutes at least twice\nday and making sure to clean along the gumline<\/li><li>Flossing daily to clean spaces a toothbrush can\u2019t\nreach<\/li><li>Using a mouth rinse to reduce bacteria and\nplaque levels in your mouth<\/li><li>Eating foods with plenty of vitamin A and C\nwhile limiting sugary and starchy snacks<\/li><li>Avoiding cigarettes and other forms of tobacco<\/li><li>Attending regular dental checkups and cleanings<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you think you might have gum disease despite your best\nefforts, call your dentist as soon as possible; you might end up needing\ntreatment.
